A Salem City Schools student has earned national recognition for his original music composition in the National PTA Reflections Art Contest.

Miguel Santos-Ruiz, an eighth-grade student at Andrew Lewis Middle School in Salem, placed second nationally for his composition “I Belong” in the annual arts competition.

Miguel’s entry advanced through every level of the contest, earning first place at the school, council and Virginia PTA levels before advancing to the national competition.

The National PTA Reflections program has supported arts education for more than 50 years and encourages students to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas through various art forms.

School officials said Miguel’s accomplishment reflects both his musical talent and Salem City Schools’ commitment to arts education.
