The Roanoke College softball team went 1-3 over four games last week as the Maroons hosted two ODAC rivals at the Moyer Complex in Salem. On Saturday Virginia Wesleyan swept a doubleheader from the Maroons and on Sunday RC split with Randolph Macon.
On Saturday Virginia Wesleyan, the top-ranked Division III team in the nation, swept the Maroons by scores of 9-0 and 11-2. Marlins’ pitcher Hann Hannah Hearl pitched a no-hitter in the opener, missing a perfect game by allowing just one walk. In the nightcap VWU jumped on top early, 5-0, and cruised to the win. Charlotte Gale had two hits for RC.
On Sunday the Maroons bounced back with a 4-1 win over Randolph-Macon in the opener. After the Yellow Jackets took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the second, Roanoke’s Haleigh Vaughan drove a two-run single up the middle for a 2-1 Maroon edge. The Maroons loaded the bases in the fifth looking for insurance runs and Molly Houchins delivered with a two-run hit. Junior Baylee Compton finished what she started in the circle, allowing just one baserunner the final three frames.
The Yellow Jackets prevailed in game two, 3-1. Grace Clary threw a complete game for RC, allowing five hits, one earned run and one walk, but the offense sputtered as the Maroons managed just two hits.
The weekend action left Roanoke at 10-12 overall and 3-5 in conference games. Roanoke is now off until Tuesday, April 7, when the Maroons host Averett University for an ODAC doubleheader at 3 pm.
