The University of Fairfax, which is based on E. Main Street in Salem and affiliated with American National University, has been approved to participate in Title IV federal financial aid programs, clearing the way for students to access federal grants and loans beginning with the Jan. 12, 2026, academic term.
University officials announced the designation last month, calling it a major step toward improving access and affordability for both current and prospective students.
Founded in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks to meet growing demand for cybersecurity expertise, the University of Fairfax began as an institution focused on serving working professionals through flexible online programs. The university has since expanded its offerings to include software development, computer science and engineering, cloud computing and business.
Title IV eligibility signifies that the university meets federal standards for regulatory compliance, financial responsibility and student support.
“This recognition from the U.S. Department of Education is a testament to the University of Fairfax’s dedication to academic excellence and institutional integrity,” President Umesh Varma said in a statement. “Title IV eligibility enhances our ability to serve students from diverse backgrounds by removing financial barriers and supporting their pursuit of advanced education in technology, cybersecurity and related disciplines.”
University leaders said access to federal aid will give students greater financial flexibility as they pursue degrees in high-demand technology fields. The institution said the move also strengthens its efforts to support professionals who balance work, military service and continued education by enabling federal loan deferment options.
Title IV status may also open opportunities for additional federal partnerships. The university said the designation positions it to pursue a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Department of Defense and deepen its collaboration on cybersecurity and information assurance workforce needs.
Officials said the approval reinforces the university’s mission to prepare graduate and doctoral students for leadership roles across the technology and innovation sectors.
