VHSL announces Wells Fargo Cup leaders after winter season

Auburn, Maggie Walker, Western Albemarle, Blacksburg, Princess Anne, and Cosby sit atop of the Class standings following the winter sports season.

Salem is ninth in the Class  4 standings after the winter season, scoring 30 points in boys’ swimming and 20 in girls’ indoor track during the winter season. Glenvar is 19th after scoring 30 in girls’ swimming during the winter.

Auburn (Class 1), Blacksburg (Class 4), Cosby (Class 6) are the only leaders from the fall season still holding the top spots in their standings. Auburn (Class 1) is looking for a second Cup in three years, Maggie Walker is looking to win a fifth straight Cup, while Blacksburg (Class 4) seeking a record 13th Cup title and eighth since 2009. Cosby (Class 6) is also seeking a second Cup after claiming one in 2012 and Princess Anne (Class 5) is hoping to hoist its first Cup.

First awarded in 1990, the Wells Fargo Cup goes to the school in each group classification that has achieved the best overall record in VHSL state-level competition in 27 sports – the state champions’ state champion.

Cups are presented for athletic and academic activities to the top school in each of the League’s enrollment groups.

The winner of the Wells Fargo Cup is determined by a point system based on performance in state championship events.
