Salem, VA – March 29, 2025 – Veterans, families, and community members gathered at the VA Medical Center in Salem, Virginia, for a solemn and heartfelt pinning ceremony honoring Vietnam War veterans and their families. Part of the national commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, the event recognized the service and sacrifices of those who wore the nation’s uniform during one of the most challenging conflicts in U.S. history.

The ceremony paid tribute to the more than 9 million Americans who served on active duty during the Vietnam War era, including the 2.7 million who served in Vietnam itself. These veterans endured harsh conditions and significant personal sacrifice, only to return home to a nation that often greeted them with indifference or hostility. Saturday’s event sought to express the gratitude they should have received decades ago.

“This ceremony is about recognizing the courage, dedication, and resilience of our Vietnam veterans,” said John Miller, a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America. “Too many of our brothers and sisters came home to a divided nation and never heard the words ‘thank you.’ Today, we ensure they do.”

The ceremony also honored the sacrifices made by the families of service members. “Behind every soldier stands a family who also serves,” one speaker noted. “To the spouses who kept homes running, to the children who grew up with a parent deployed, and to the parents who sent their sons and daughters into harm’s way, your strength deserves recognition too.”

A moment of silence honored the 58,318 American service members whose names are etched on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., as well as the 1,556 who are still considered missing in action. The event also highlighted the contributions of allies, federal agencies, and organizations that supported military efforts during the war.

Each Vietnam veteran in attendance received the Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin, a symbol of the nation’s gratitude. Designed by the Department of Defense’s Vietnam War Commemoration Commission, the pin features an eagle’s head representing courage and dedication, a laurel wreath signifying honor, and six stars symbolizing the United States and its allies. Inscribed on the back are the words: “A Grateful Nation Thanks and Honors You.”

“We have waited 50 years for this,” one veteran remarked as he received his pin. “Today, we feel seen, honored, and respected.”

As the ceremony came to a close, the veterans, their families, and the community shared a moment of reflection and unity, reminded of the importance of acknowledging the past and honoring those who served. Today’s ceremony marked a powerful step toward healing and recognition. With the Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin and the heartfelt gratitude expressed, the event not only celebrated their service but reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to remembering and honoring their sacrifices.
