The Virginia State Police announced on Monday it is investigating a two-vehicle crash which resulted in a fatality. The crash occurred Friday at 4:25 p.m. on Interstate 81 southbound at the 133-mile marker in Roanoke County.
A 1998 International 4700 was traveling south on Interstate 81, when the vehicle struck a 2022 Freightliner tractor trailer in the rear.
The driver of the International was identified as Jerry A. Mailhoit, Sr., 67, of Crossville, TN. Mailhoit was wearing his seatbelt and was flown from the scene to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
The driver of the Freightliner was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation, according to the police.
