As National Wellness Month begins, the YMCA of Virginia’s Blue Ridge is inviting residents across the region to explore new ways to stay active, connect with others and take steps toward better health.
Through a variety of programs — from youth athletics to senior fitness to hot yoga — the YMCA aims to provide something for every age and ability.
“Wellness looks different for everyone — and that’s the beauty of it,” said Amanda Keffer, branch executive director for the YMCA at Tanglewood. “Whether you’re finding your community in a group class or trying something new like hot yoga, we want people to know the Y is here for them. This month is a great time to take that first step.”
Youth Programs Focus on Strength, Skills and Confidence
Teens can participate in weekly activities at the YMCA at Tanglewood every Tuesday and Thursday evening, including pickleball, gaga ball and giant yard games. The programs aim to keep teens engaged, active and social in a safe environment.
This fall, an additional teen fitness program will launch:
Explosive Speed and Agility at the Salem Family YMCA: Athletic performance training for ages 9–16, running Oct. 13–Nov. 19 on Mondays and Wednesdays.
The Y also offers free Teen Strength Orientations, where wellness staff guide youth through the proper use of machines, cables and free weights.
Supporting Healthy Aging
More than 4,300 older adults participate in YMCA programs each year. On Aug. 19, the YMCA at Tanglewood will host a special Active Adult Luncheon at noon, featuring fitness demonstrations, social activities and resources for healthy aging.
Hot Yoga Studio Offers Mind-Body Benefits
Hot yoga classes continue throughout August and beyond at the YMCA at Tanglewood’s Hot Studio. The practice offers benefits such as improved flexibility, detoxification, circulation and mental clarity.
