Radford, Floyd County and James River finished one-two-three in the Region 2C sub-region tournament at Great Oaks in Floyd County Monday, qualifying for a spot in next Monday’s region tournament. The region tournament will be held at the Stoney Creek course in Wintergreen.
The top three teams from the sub-region advanced and it was a battle to the end. Radford won the sub-region with a team score of 321 followed by Floyd County at 322. River was next at 335 as all three teams that advanced come from the Three Rivers District. Hunter Crist of Radford was the medalist with a 70.
Six individuals not on the top three teams also advanced and Glenvar had three of the six. The Highlanders qualifying for the region tournament are Mason Young with a 79, John Deel with an 85 and Easton Quesenberry with an 86. Also scoring for the Highlanders, but not advancing, was Jack Osburn at 94. Jackson Jones came in at 96 and Brendan Miller shot 98 as Glenvar totaled 344 as a team.
“Rough day on the links,” said Glenvar coach Shawn Duff. “The golfers struggled early on the front nine of Great Oaks. They found their footing on the back nine but sadly the damage was done early for our squad.”
“I was proud of how we hung in there through a tough opening nine and showed grit and determination on the back nine.”
The Class 2 state tournament will be Oct. 12 at the Hobbs Hole course in Tappahannock, Virginia.
