The Christiansburg Blue Demons pulled out a win over Salem in a River Ridge District softball game Tuesday. The host team took a 2-1 victory in Christiansburg.
“It was a good game,” said Salem coach John Counts. “They played flawless defense and held us to one hit, but we were in it until the end.”
The Blue Demons scored two runs in the second inning off Spartan pitcher Cora Robinson, and that would prove to be enough. Salem’s run came in the top of the fourth when Bayleigh Booth singled for Salem’s only hit, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a fielder’s choice RBI by Robinson.
Cora pitched all six innings and allowed just four hits, fanning three, as Salem dropped to 8-6 with the loss.
Salem beat up on two Roanoke City teams in the two games prior to Tuesday. Last Thursday at Patrick Henry Robinson struck out 12 as Salem beat the Patriots, 21-2. Lily Lawson had a two run homer and four runs batted in and Sarah Tennant scored three times.
On Monday at William Fleming the Spartans thumped the Colonels, 19-2. Cora Sparger pitched a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and was also four-for-four at the plate with three doubles and five runs batted in. Booth also had four hits while driving in four and Caitlin Wells was three-for-five with four RBIS. Maize Roop had two hits and drove in three.
The Spartans are back in action today with a home game against Hidden Valley.
