It will be an all-Three Rivers District night when the Smith River Complex in Martinsville plays host to the Region 2C soccer finals tonight. The Glenvar boys and girls are both in the finals and they’ll be playing district opponents for the region championship.
Region 2C semifinals were Tuesday night at the Smith River Complex and Glenvar dominated play. The boys took a 9-0 win over Dan River and the girls beat Chatham, 8-0.
Tonight, the boys will meet Radford while the girls take on Alleghany, both Three Rivers District members. The Radford boys eliminated Chatham on Tuesday while the Alleghany girls beat Dan River. Tonight’s championship games will both be played at 6 pm on side-by-side artificial turf fields at the Smith River Complex.
Both teams have also clinched state championship berths. The boys are undefeated with a 17-0-1 record and if they win tonight they would host a state quarterfinal game next Tuesday. The girls are now 15-4 and they’re also in a state game Tuesday. Tonight’s Region C winners will host state quarterfinals and the runnerup Region 2C teams will play at the home of the Region 2D champs in quarterfinal state play.
The boys continued their dominating play in the past week. Last Friday the Highlanders won their region quarterfinal game on a rainy night at Highlander Stadium, 6-1, over James River. The visiting Knights battled the Highlanders to a nil-nil tie at the half but Glenvar was able to score six unanswered goals after intermission before the Knights averted the shutout with a late scorre.
Colin Clapper punched in the first one from about eight yards out to get the scoring started. Riley Geddes followed up with a goal after that. Other goal scorers were Jacson Shepherd, with two, Aidan Hylton and Bryce King. Collecting assists were Shepherd, with three, Clapper, Hylton and Geddes.
“I thought the guys did a great job of coming out and implementing some adjustments we made at the half,” said Glenvar coach Josh Jones. “This helped us pull away in the second half. It was nice to get back out there and play after a 15 day layoff.”
On Tuesday the boys got two goals each from Maddox Fisher and Geddes and one each from Clapper, Shepherd, King, Wesley Feliciano and Erwin Montanez. Clapper had three assists and Shepherd had two.
The girls had a tougher time in their quarterfinal, pulling out a 2-1 win at Radford. Giuliana Stanley scored both goals for Glenvar, with Rhyan Harris and Campbell Hardin assisting.
On Tuesday in Martinsville the girls were hitting on all cylinders in a dominating region semifinal win. Stanley had three goals in this one and Davin Tate and Kailah Finley had two each. Faren Wilson had the other goal while Jordin Crouch and Bryn Duff had two assists each and Anna Vecellio, Harden and Tate also had assists.
