SHS lax drops opener

The Salem boys opened the lacrosse season on the road last Friday and dropped an 11-7 decision to host Woodberry Forest School, a private school in Virginia.

The Spartans are off this week but return next Tuesday for their home open-er against Jefferson Forest. Coach George Revercomb is expecting big things.

“Last year’s team made some big waves with the undefeated regular season and winning the region title, but we didn’t play the way we wanted in the state play-offs,” he said. “The boys have been working hard this offseason and we have high expectations for this year’s team as well. We bring back all but one defender from last season, so that’s a part of the team I feel really good about.”

Salem graduated a couple big scorers in Kaiden Garst and Andrew Crumpacker but plenty of firepower returns.

“On offense we have some big shoes to fill, but a lot of young talent has been stepping up,” said Revercomb. “We’re chal-lenging our team by adding a few tougher games to the schedule with private school powers St. Anne’s Belfield and Woodberry Forest. We think that will pay dividends as we get deeper into the sea-son. The staff and the players loved how much support the Salem community showed us last season, and we’re look-ing to build off that and real-ly put Salem lacrosse on the state map.”
