The Salem High softball team saw their string of six straight shutout wins broken last week but came out no worse for the wear with two lopsided wins. Salem beat Blacksburg, 13-1, and Pulaski County, 16-1, in two River Ridge District games.
Last Wednesday in Blacksburg Cora Robinson’s two-run homer was the big blow in a six run fourth inning. Ciara Steele singled in the inning and Caitlin Wells doubled in two. Evie Van Liew and Wells each had two hits in the game.
Robinson pitched for Salem and picked up the win. She gave up five hits to the Bruins while striking out seven.
On Friday in Dublin Robinson was in the circle again to pick up her second win in three days. This time she fanned 10 in five two-hit innings as Salem won by slaughter rule.
Cora Grace Sparger led the way at the plate for the Spartans, driving in six runs with three hits. Kayden Dalton, Piper Furmage, Evie Van Liew, Anne Crew and Robinson all had multiple hits and Robinson homered for the second consecutive game.
The win gave Salem an 11-3 record and the Spartans are undefeated in the district after seven games. The Spartans put a nine-game winnings streak on the line at Northside Wednesday but results were too late for publication. Prior that game the Salemites had allowed just three runs in their past 12 games.
This Friday Salem is at Cave Spring for a 5 pm start.
