The Salem High tennis teams both won match es last week as the boys defeated Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg and the girls beat the Bulldogs in Salem.
The boys avenged a prior 7-2 loss to LCA with the win. Long rallies and close games in all the singles matchups ended with four Salem points as Alan Burr, Dresden Fries, Thomas Powell and Evan Graybill got the wins. The doubles teams from LCA had swept the Spartans in the first meeting but this time Evan and Jack Dixon at first doubles and Thomas and Dresden at number three both prevailed, 8-6.
“This was a fine exam ple of a full team vic tory,” said coach Steve Lilly.
The girls had won 5-4 in their first meeting with LCA but this time they took an 8-1 win in Salem. The Spartans won three singles matches by 8-6 scores with Christine Burr at number one, Kiele Dudley at number five and Gracie Michael at number six.
“All three girls stayed focused and pulled out the wins, sweeping all six singles courts before going into the doubles,” said coach Jill Perez.
This week both teams will be challenged with matches against Cave Spring, Lord Botetourt and Blacksburg.
