The Salem girls had the lead on Blacksburg in the second half last Friday before the Bruins swarmed back to take a 4-1 win their home pitch.
The Spartans played the Bruins to a scoreless first half, then took a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the second half. Laikyn Funk took a shot that bounced off a Bruin defender for an “own goal” to give the Spartans the lead. That held up for close to 15 minutes before the homestanding Bruins tied it, took the lead, and added a few insurance goals.
“They pulled ahead late and scored a couple more when we were pressing to try and equalize,” said Salem coach Justin Applegate.
On Tuesday the Spartans were back in action against Hidden Valley and fell to 6-7-1 with a 3-0 loss. Last Wednesday they took a 5-0 non-district win over Lord Botetourt in Daleville.
The Spartans have their last home game of the regular season this Friday against Christiansburg. Next week they wrap things up with a game in Roanoke against Patrick Henry on Tuesday and a trip to Pulaski County on Friday, May 15.
