Salem’s Bob Gray wore many hats

Bob Gray

Bob Gray, a well known sports personality in the City of Salem for many years, passed away on April 21 at the age of 93.

Bob wore many hats serving the citizens of Salem. He worked for the Salem Department of Parks and Recreation and helped maintain fields at Kiwanis Park, the Moyer Complex, Salem Stadium and wherever games were played. Bob was especially fond of softball and coached at Ferrum College and also with girls’ travel teams.

Gray officiated a variety of sports, including high school football for many years. He also officiated softball, hockey, lacrosse and basketball. Softball was his passion.

A native of West Virginia and a big Mountaineer sports fan, Bob mentored and inspired athletes of all ages during his many years in Salem. Even in retirement he continued working part-time at the Salem Civic Center and Salem Stadium.
