Salem Museum 28th Annual Ghost Walk — Oct. 1-3, 6-8 p.m., East Hill Cemetery, Salem. The Salem Museum’s 28th Annual Ghost Walk returns Oct. 1-3, with tours departing from the museum every 15 minutes from 6 to 8 p.m. “Ghosts” will share stories about notable people and places from Salem’s more than 200-year history during family-friendly tours that are informative and fun, but not scary. Advance tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for students of any age and free for children 3 and younger. Advance registration is recommended. The tour covers just over a half-mile, so comfortable walking shoes and a flashlight are recommended. In case of rain, the event will move indoors to the Salem Museum. Proceeds benefit the Salem Museum and its educational programs. Tickets are available at the Salem Museum or online.
“Salem, Virginia’s Cherokee Defense”: The Salem Museum will host Central Appalachian Cherokee Tribe CEO and Principal Chief Ren Herdman for “Salem, Virginia’s Cherokee Defense” at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. Herdman will explore a little-known episode in the Colonial history of the Roanoke Valley involving then-Major Andrew Lewis, Cherokee Chief Ostenaco and the 130 Cherokee who camped along the Roanoke River in 1756 during the French and Indian War. Star-B-Q: The 18th annual Star-B-Q will be held Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the Salem Farmers Market, 3 E. Main St., featuring Trey Pendley and live country music. Gates open at 5 p.m. Attendees can enjoy barbecue, beverages and music, and are encouraged to bring chairs. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 the day of the event; children 10 and younger are free. Proceeds benefit the Rotary Club of Salem. There will be no re-entry. The event is presented by Salem Parks & Recreation, Star Country, Renewal by Andersen and Holiday Inn Express Salem.
