Bruins blank Salem teams on court

The Salem High tennis teams had a rough time last Thursday as both lost to Cave Spring, 9-0. The boys were at home and the girls were at Cave Spring.

“Ironically, the team played well throughout the lineup,” said boys’ coach Steve Lily. “After losing the top three players from ’25 everyone is stepping up their game.”

The Cave Spring girls have two junior tournament players who chose not to play on the high school team in previous seasons.

“They are playing this year, which makes for a tough team,” said Salem coach Jill Perez. “With our top four graduating last year we have definitely turned our focus back to the fundamentals. Although the scores don’t reflect the effort in several of these matches, the girls didn’t give up and were more competitive in some matches than the scores reflect. Kiele Dudley had a particularly great day, regardless of the scores.”

The Spartans were scheduled to play strong Blacksburg teams on Tuesday but results were too late for publication. The boys will host Liberty Christian Academy today with the girls taking on LCA in Lynchburg, and Friday the boys are at Hidden Valley and the girls’ will host the Titans at SHS.
