This weekend will be the first time in the high school football season that Glenvar senior quarterback Brody Dawyot won’t get into the end zone, either by ground or by air. The undefeated Highlanders have their bye this week.
Dawyot found the end zone seven more times last Friday in a 56-6 rout of Patrick County at Highlander Stadium. It was the last home game of the regular season and Brody made it a memorable one with five touchdown passes, a touchdown run and a fumble recovery for a score.

The five TD passes make him the all-time leader in Virginia High School League history for touchdown passes with 123. He passed Freedom High’s Tristan Evans-Trujillo who had 121 from 2021 to ’23.
Dawyot now has 45 touchdowns in nine games this season, an average of five per game. He’s thrown for 28, rushed for 16 and has one defensive score. Brody has accounted for 163 touchdowns in his four year career at Glenvar, and that puts him third all-time in the state. Ronald Curry, who went on to play at North Carolina, has the VHSL record with 185 and Gretna grad Vic Hall is second with 171. If Glenvar would make the state championship game Brody could have six more games, counting the regular season finale with Floyd County on November 7. He would have to average almost four touchdowns a game to pass Curry against increasingly tough opposition.
Last Friday’s game with Patrick was over before it was over. The Highlanders led 35-0 after the first quarter and 42-0 at the half. Glenvar coach Kevin Clifford was pleased with the continued strong effort on the field.
“They know what the expectations are,” he said. “Play hard every play and if you’re in that mindset you can have fun.”
Dawyot finished with 314 yards passing, completing 16 of 21. Cooper Mullins had eight receptions for 165 yards and three TDs. Jace Forster had four catches for 43 yards and two scores and Cale Vaughan had a 50 yard reception.
Ranger Swanson rushed 20 times for 108 yards and a touchdown. Dawyot had three rushes for 54 yards and a score.
The only disappointment of the night was that the Highlanders gave up a late touchdown and failed to get their sixth shutout of the season. Dawyot was dominant on defense as well with two sacks, four tackles for losses and a “scoop and score” touchdown. Jake Franklin had 11 tackles, Vaughan and Rawlin Hanks had 10 each and Nick Wilson had nine. Franklin and Wilson had a sack and three tackles for loss each.
With the win the Highlanders retained their spot atop the Region 2C rankings with a 24.89 rating. Gretna is next at 24.12 and Floyd County is third at 23.50. After this week’s bye the Highlanders will end the regular season with a trip to Floyd.
Glenvar is currently fourth overall in the state among Class 2 schools in the VHSL rating system. They trail, in order, Poquoson, Armstrong and Union. Gretna is fifth and Floyd County is ninth.
