The Salem High 10U sandlot football team is headed to the Super Bowl. The Salem team defeated Glenvar, 16-8, in the tournament semifinal last Saturday morning at Bogle Stadium behind Cave Spring Middle School.

It was a close game all the way. The first quarter was scoreless and Salem scored first on a one yard run by Hudson Scharnus on a quarterback sneak, adding a two point conversion kick. Glenvar tied the game with just 14 seconds left in the half when Preston Hayes connected with Trey Blankenship on a 20 yard TD pass play, and the kick was good for an 8-8 halftime tie.

Salem regained the lead with a minute and a half remaining in the third period. Myles Barber got a good block off the left side of the line and raced 55 yards to the end zone. Barber then drilled the extra point for a 16-8 Salem lead and held off a couple late Glenvar drives to win the game.

The Salem 10U team advances to the Sandlot Super Bowl championship game at Salem Stadium this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 11 am and Salem will play Cave Spring, who beat Hidden Valley in the other semifinal.

The 10U game is one of three championships that will be decided at Salem Stadium Saturday. Action kicks off at 9 am with the 8U championship game between Botetourt and Franklin County. Botetourt defeated Glenvar, 26-6, in the 8U semifinal round last Saturday at Bogle. Franklin County beat Hidden Valley in the other semifinal, 16-8.

The tripleheader concludes with the 12U championship at 1 pm, featuring two Cave Spring teams. One of the Cave Spring teams eliminated Salem’s 12U team last Saturday at Northside’s Hickam Field, 8-0, in a semifinal game. The other Cave Spring team upset top-seeded Franklin County, 16-14.

Glenvar 10U quarterback Preston Hayes looks downfield with time running out in the first half. He found Trey Blankenship
who fought his way past two Salem defenders to score a touchdown for Glenvar.
