Three buildings on the corner of East Main and Broad streets will be razed in early April to make was for a parking lit and a possible mini-mall. Salem City council voted unanimously Monday night to demolish the buildings awarding the contract to Alan L. Amos Wrecking Company. The low bid by Amos includes the cost of taking the debris toa private landfill. “We do not want the debris dumped in the city landfill,” Vice Mayor Mac Green said.
Amos plans to begin work Monday, with the hand labor taking two weeks to complete and the demolition one week. Green said a temporary parking lot will be constructed on the site, but he emphasized the city hoped it will only be temporary. He would like to have a mall, bazaar-type operation located on the site,” he said. The city purchased the property last year from the partnership of E. Cabell Brand, John Rocovich and Leon Mitchell. Five businesses located in the buildings were uprooted in February by the city to make way for the project.
