The Glenvar swimmers will be in Christiansburg tonight to compete in the Region C meet for Class 1 & 2 teams.

The Highlander girls team will look to defend their 2020 Region 1/2C championship with state individual champions Reese Dunkenberger and Claire Griffith leading the way. A very talented team from George Wythe and deep roster of girls from Radford will be among some of the tough competition the girls will face.

The boys are led by senior Derrick Hall and sophomore Cooper Campbell, who swam on last year’s state qualifying team.  The top four finishers in the region qualify for the state championship which will be held February 11th at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Last week Glenvar swam against Hidden Valley and William Byrd. On Tuesday the girls lost to Region 3D champion Hidden Valley while the boys swam their best meet of the season,  narrowly losing to the Titans by only eight points.

On Wednesday night at the Gator Center the busy Highlanders had their third meet in as any nights. The defending Class 2 champion GHS girls picked up a big win against William Byrd while the boys lost to the Region 3D champion Terriers.

The boys Medley Relay team of Derrick Hall, Zander Hoanaker, Cooper Campbell and Colvin Delano took second at the Gator Center and the girls team of Macy Westland, Brooklyn Woolwine, Carly Wilkes and McKenna Shearer also finished second.

Derrick Hall finished third in the boys 200 freestyle while Reese Dunkenberger and Adrianna Hall went first and second for the girls. Natalie McMahon won the girls 200 individual medley and Kaylin Paitsel, Westland and Shearer swept the girls 50 freestyle.

Campbell was third in the boys 100 butterfly while Wilkes was second in the girls.  Paitsel, Shearer and Daylie Umbarger swept the girls 100 freestyle.  Dunkenberger and Adrianna Hall again went first and second in the girls 500 freestyle.

The boys 200 freestyle relay team of Delano, Derrick Hall, Dylan Smith and Jacob Hall finished second. In the Girls 200 freestyle relay Glenvar’s A team of McMahon, Shearer, Adrianna Hall and Dunkenberger won the event while the B team of Rachel Holton, Paitsel, Umbarger and Westland finished second.

Jacob Hall was third in the boys 100 backstroke while Wilkes and McMahon were first and second for the girls.  Zander Hoanaker and Tucker Henderson were second and third in the boys 100 breaststroke and Woolwine was third for the girls.  The girls 400 freestyle relay team of Adrianna Hall, McMahon, Wilkes and Dunkenberger won the event.

“Coach Daniel Smith and I were exhausted after three consecutive meets and four meets in ten days, but in this COVID-19 shortened season that’s what was put in front of us,” said Glenvar coach Shannon Hall. “The team got in some much needed competition and is better prepared to take on the post-season.”
