The defending state champion Glenvar girls won their 17th straight soccer game Tuesday to improve to 18-2 overall and, more importantly, earn a spot in the Class 2 state soccer semifinals on Friday afternoon at Roanoke College. The girls will play Poquoson at 3 pm.

The Highlanders punched their ticket to the “final four” at RC with a 3-0 win over Central of Wise at GHS Tuesday. Camryn Stevens, Sawyer Wilson and Davin Tate scored goals for the Highlanders in the win.

The Glenvar girls are now 18-2 after a 1-2 start to the season. If they can win Friday they’ll play for the state championship at Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon at 12:30 pm.

Last Thursday the girls played Chatham in the Region 2C championship game at the Smith River Complex in Martinsville. Chatham was undefeated and the higher seed but Glenvar was the better team, shutting out the Cavaliers 9-0 to win the region crown.

Stevens continued her outstanding play with five goals, giving her 12 in the three game region tournament. Tate, Annie George, Anna Vecellio and Wilson had one goal each. The girls outscored three teams by a combined 19-0 in the three-game tournament.

“We had a phenomenal game and region tournament,” said Glenvar coach Kyleigh Drew.

Poquoson comes into Friday’s game with an 11-6 record. Clarke County and Graham will play in the other semifinal at RC at 1 pm Friday.
