The Glenvar baseball team is one of the few teams in action this week as the local school systems take a week off for spring break.

The Highlanders had a game at Covington Monday, at home against Carroll County on Tuesday, and on Friday they’ll play a jayvee-varsity doubleheader at James River. The jayvees will open at 4 pm Friday in Buchanan with the varsity to follow.

Glenvar was 3-2 after winning in Covington Monday, 20-8 in five innings.  Tyler Smith was four-for-four to lead Glenvar with six runs batted in and Logan Lucas was three-for-three with seven RBIs and four runs scored. Also contributing to the attack was Adam Veverka, who was two-for-two and scored twice, and Cameron Wiley, who had two hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored.

Hunter Phlegar started and Ryan Lee pitched the third and fourth innings to pick up the win.

Last Thursday freshman Ryan Butler pitched a complete game as the Highlanders defeated Galax at Glenvar, 2-0. Butler struck out seven and allowed just three hits and one walk in his first varsity start on the mound, and he also drove in a run. Phlegar had a double and an RBI.

Next week the Highlanders are at Alleghany on Tuesday and home to Floyd County on Friday, April 13
