The Salem and Glenvar swimmers will be back in the water next Tuesday for meets. Salem will be in Christiansburg while Glenvar is home for a meet at the Salem YMCA.

Glenvar swam at the Salem Y last Thursday with five other schools. The Highlanders swept the boys’ opponents and the girls went 4-1, losing only to a strong Radford team by a narrow margin.

For the boys Landon Cairns earned victories in both the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.95) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.84). Aspen Thompson also turned in a standout performance, winning the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.20) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.59). Both of Thompson’s individual swims met VHSL state qualifying standards.

The Highlanders closed the meet by sweeping the 400-yard freestyle relay, finishing first and second with times of 4:09.61 and 4:11.56, completing a clean sweep of all five opposing teams.

The Glenvar girls were led by Macy McMahon, who won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:17.33 and later placed second in the 100-yard butterfly. The girls closed the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Evelyn Gard, Sophie Childers, Chloe Childers, and McMahon touched first in 4:52.85.

“It was a fun and competitive evening of swimming with many Highlanders setting new personal records and others swimming tougher events for the first time,” said Glenvar coach Shannon Hall.

The Swimming Highlanders had a solid meet Thursday night against Liberty, with strong performances from both the boys and girls teams.

The Spartans had a dual meet in Blacksburg with the host Bruins last Friday.

Salem’s Jack Lawrence won the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 59.54 in a dual meet with Blacksburg last Friday afternoon.
