Austin Meadows pitched a complete game two-hit shutout to lead Glenvar over Conference 38 rival James River in baseball Tuesday. The Highlanders took a 4-0 win at Glenvar.

Meadows was nearly flawless, allowing just two singles against a strong hitting James River team. He walked none and finished the game with less than 90 pitches. The VHSL maximum for a high school pitcher is 110 in a game.

“He pitched well and we played good defense behind him,” said Glenvar coach Ben Amos. “We had no errors and turned a couple doubleplays.”

The Highlanders had to manufacture their runs against River’s ace pitcher Landen Horton. Four different players had one RBI each, Brayden Smith, Matthew Pulliam, Trp Adams and Meadows. Smith, Hunter Phlegar and Logan Lucas had two hits each for the Highlanders and R.J. Rorrer scored two runs.

With the win Glenvar improved to 7-5 on the season. The Highlanders lost a heartbreaker at Radford last Saturday afternoon, 3-2. Radford was down 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Conner Phillips doubled off of Hunter Phlegar, driving in three runs.

“The pitching was strong on both sides,” said Amos.

Meadows took the loss for Glenvar, pitching four and a third innings and allowing two runs while striking out four and walking none. Phlegar relieved and took the loss.

Glenvar had nine hits in the game. Jacob Mullins and Rorrer each collected multiple hits while Lucas and Phlegar each drove in one run.

The Highlanders were scheduled to play Martinsville at home on Wednesday, but results were too late for publication. On Friday Glenvar is at Auburn.
