The basketball office suite at Radford University’s Dedmon Center was named for former Highlander coach Joe Davis and his wife, Anne, at a ceremony at RU last Thursday. Davis coached Glenvar to the state Group 2A championship in 1975 and was the first basketball coach at Salem High when it opened in 1977. Joe left Salem to coach at Radford in 1978, just the second men’s coach after the school became co-ed, and lifted the program to new heights and a new arena. Left, Davis(right in photo) listens to guest speaker Steve Robinson along with RU athletic director Robert Lineburg, with photos of Joe coaching at Radford behind him. Right, he accepts a framed jersey from Robinson(left) as Anne Davis enjoys the day. Robinson, now an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina, was on Joe’s first team at Radford, and many of his other former players were also in attendance to honor Davis.
