The Glenvar golfers will hit the links this week with two matches to start the fall season. The Highlanders were scheduled to play in the Botetourt Metro on Tuesday and today they’re in Martinsville for a match at the Forest Park Country Club.
“We have a young nucleus returning this year,” said Glenvar coach Shawn Duff. “We’re excited with the work sophomores John Deel and Mason Young have been putting in this offseason.”
Both qualified for the region tournament last year as freshmen and are ready to make a big jump this season.
Duff is also excited about returning players like seniors Easton Quesenberry and Jackson Jones, junior Jack Osburn and sophomores Isaac Carroll and Brendan Miller. Newcomers to the team who could be a factor are senior Jax Bolling, junior Parker Doolan and freshman Maddox Burbage.
“We are looking forward to what these guys can do this season,” said Duff.
The Three Rivers District should be strong again. Floyd County dominated last year and the Buffaloes have a new coach in Gino Williams. James River is also going to have a strong team with two all-state players returning for their senior year.
“Donna Cox is a great coach and has two outstanding players in Landon Bolling and Mason Gilliland,” said Duff about the James River team. “Radford will have Hunter Crist and coach Cody Roberts always has them ready to play. Patrick County and Carroll County are always formidable and Martinsville is building and improving.”
Glenvar’s home course will be the Hanging Rock Golf Club once again. The Highlanders will host a district match there on Aug. 27 at 1 p.m..
“My goal this season is to get this team to play to their ability by focusing on positive attitudes, course management, and attention to short game success,” said Duff.
