Highlanders let one slip away

Zella Hayes had four hits against Radford Tuesday.

The Glenvar girls will be headed to Patrick County today looking for a Three Rivers District softball win. The Highlanders were 1-8 overall and 1-3 in the district after a 14-9 loss at Radford High Tuesday.

Glenvar let a 9-3 lead get away against Radford. Zella Hayes had four hits for the Highlanders and Augusta Ford had three.

Last week Glenvar dropped games on back-to-back days at home, 15-5 to Northside on Wednesday and 10-0 to James River on Thursday. Against Northside Glenvar trailed just 6-4 after three innings but the defense collapsed in the fourth inning, opening the flood gates for the Vikings. Jaycee Nunley pitched all five innings for Glenvar and was done in by nine Highlander errors. Kyleigh Luck had two hits.

On Thursday the defense was better but James River bats were booming against GHS pitchers Paisley Hodge and Nunley. Glenvar loaded the bases in the fourth inning but couldn’t push a run across. Ford had two hits.

This is a tough week for the Highlanders, who have three games in three days. After traveling to Radford on Tuesday they were scheduled to play at Patrick Henry Wednesday and at Patrick County on Thursday.
