Coffee with Council: Salem City Councilman Hunter Holliday host’s Coffee with Council every month in the Salem Library Community Room. Going into its eighth month it has connected over 300 Salem citizens directly with members of Salem City Council, City Administrators, and Directors. The goal of Coffee with Council is to foster open, honest dialogue about the issues that matter most to Salem residents. Whether it’s public safety, infrastructure, economic development, or quality-of-life concerns, these gatherings provide an accessible and informal space to ask questions, share ideas, and stay informed.

Upcoming Citizen Forums: Thursday, April 16 6:00 – 7:30 guests include Councilwoman Anne Marie Green and Salem City Manager Chris Dorsey. All events will be held at the Salem Public Library Community Room. All Salem residents are encouraged to attend, enjoy a cup of coffee, pastry and be part of the conversation shaping our city’s future.

VA250 Mobile Museum Experience at Salem Museum: The Commonwealth of Virginia’s VA250 Mobile Museum Experience, “Out of Many, One,” will visit the Salem Museum from Thursday, April 16, through Saturday, April 18. The free, family-friendly traveling exhibit, housed in an expandable tractor-trailer, offers an interactive look at the nation’s founding era ahead of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Hours are 3-4 p.m. for homeschool families and 4-5 p.m. for the public on April 16 and 17, with public hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 18. Living historians from the Fincastle Company will be on site Saturday demonstrating Colonial-era trades and crafts. The Salem Museum is located at 801 E. Main St. Admission and parking are free.

Blue Ridge Kite Festival: The 25th annual Blue Ridge Kite Festival will be held Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Green Hill Park in Roanoke County. The free, rain-or-shine event will feature kite demonstrations by the Richmond Air Force Kite Club, free kites while supplies last, family crafts and activities, artisan vendors, a commemorative 25th anniversary photo opportunity, a sensory tent and a wide variety of food vendors. Ernest “Pig” Robertson Fishing Rodeo: The 74th annual Ernest “Pig” Robertson Fishing Rodeo will be held over four days at Lake Spring Park, offering free trout fishing for area children as well as special sessions for special needs participants and nursing home residents. Children ages 3-8 fish from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 25, and children ages 9-12 fish from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2. Special needs children are invited from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, April 27, and nursing home residents from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 29. Participants must bring their own fishing gear, children may catch up to six trout and must keep all fish caught, and pre-registration is required for special needs and nursing home groups. “The Tailgate” food truck will be on-site, and prizes and trophies will be awarded. Community Shredding Event: In an effort to help local citizens protect themselves from identity theft, Vested Partners will host a free community shredding event on Saturday, April 25 from 8-11 a.m. at their office located at 300 E. 2nd Street in Salem, VA. Coffee and donuts will be provided, and you can enter a drawing to win a desktop paper shredder. No RSVP is required. This shredding event is for personal papers with a limit of three bags or boxes per person. Business shredding will not be allowed. Except for paper clips and staples, no metal, batteries, electronics, or other non-paper material can be in boxes or bags brought for shredding.

Black Label Society: Heavy metal powerhouse Black Label Society will bring its blistering riffs and high-energy performance to the Salem Civic Center on Tuesday, May 12. The band will be joined by openers Zakk Sabbath and Dark Chapel. Tickets can be found at the Salem Civic Center box office and through Ticketmaster.
