The Glenvar volleyball team will try to make a clean sweep of Class 3 teams tonight when the Highlanders play at Cave Spring. Glenvar, a Class 2 school, beat Class 3 William Byrd in three sets Monday to open the week.
Glenvar had to battle from behind to beat the Terriers in the first set Monday. Byrd had match point a few times but the Highlanders refused to give in and pulled out the set, 26-24. That seemed to break Byrd’s spirit and Glenvar won the next two, 25-15 and 25-15.
“We came back from down five points late in the first set, then played pretty well in the second and third,” said Glenvar coach Mark Rohrback.
Sophia Hammersley, Macy McMahon and Zella Hayes had seven kills each to lead the Highlanders. Emily Rohrback had 27 assists and Addi Cockram served six aces.
On Tuesday the Highlanders traveled to Patrick County where they improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the Three Rivers District with a win over the host Cougars. Once again Glenvar had to come from behind in the first set before pulling it out 26-24. Glenvar won the next two 25-20 and 25-19. Hammersley had a dozen kills, a dozen assists and one short of a dozen digs. Emily Rohrback had 25 assists and Olivia Collins had four blocks.
Glenvar’s only loss in the district so far was at Radford last Thursday when two teams that had just one loss each went head-to-head. This one went to the Bobcats in four. Glenvar won the first set, 25-20, but Radford took the next three by scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-22.
“We played well in the first set, did not play well in the second, then played inconsistently in the third and fourth,” said Rohrback. “Radford is a very strong team with lots of seniors. Hopefully we will learn from the match and use our mistakes to help us improve.”
The Highlanders will play Radford again, at Glenvar, on October 14.
