The Glenvar football team is 2-0 and the Highlanders have yet to be challenged. After beating Liberty High in Bedford last Friday, 56-0, the Highlanders have scored 126 points and have yet to be scored upon.
Liberty has not been a challenge for the Highlanders in the past three years. Glenvar has outscored the Minutemen 169-8 during that time but Highlander coach Kevin Clifford wasn’t taking them lightly.
“They had a good crowd and they were fired up,” he said. “Plus, you’ll get everyone’s best when you win, and we’ve been winning. Our kids played hard, I’m proud of their effort.”
Glenvar led 28-0 at the half and cruised to the win with a running clock early in the third period. Senior quarterback Brody Dawyot continued his assault on the GHS record book with 132 yards passing and two TDs along with 139 yards rushing and three scores. Brody has accounted for 10 touchdowns in the first two weeks of the season.
Ranger Swanson rushed for 52 yards on 13 carries and scored three times. Bryan Mateo had 35 yards rushing on just three carries. Tre Dawyot caught five passes for 62 yards and Cale Vaughan had three for 62 stripes and a couple scores.
On defense Rawlin Hanks had a big night with a team high 14 tackles, including two for losses, an interception and a fumble recovery. Jacob Franklin had 10 tackles, Vaughan had nine and Nick Wilson had eight, with three for losses. Glenvar forced six Liberty turnovers.
This week the Highlanders are back home to host Roanoke County rival Cave Spring. The Highlanders have won the past seven meetings between the two, including a 40-0 win at Cave Spring’s Bogle Stadium last year. The Knights have lost to two other Roanoke County rivals, William Byrd and Northside, to open this season.
“The two teams they lost to are 4-0,” said Clifford. “They have a good quarterback and decent size. This will be a tough game.”
If it is, it will be the first this season.
