The Glenvar soccer teams played host to Three Rivers District rival James River on Monday and the visiting Knights swept the doubleheader.

The boys played first and River took a 4-1 win over the Highlanders. Glenvar trailed 3-0 at the half and denied the visitors a shutout on a goal by Peyton Taliaferro.

The James River girls pulled out a 2-1 win over Glenvar in a tight second game. In the first half James River dominated possession and had many shots on goal, but Glenvar goal keeper Meghan Thompson kept the Highlanders in the game. Megan Hill scored early in the first half for the Knights, who led 1-0 at intermission.

River’s Emma Butler scored at the midpoint of the second half, directly from a corner kick, to make the score 2-0.  With 3:15 on the game clock Glenvar’s Kyleigh Drew scored on a late rally by the Highlanders.  The remaining minutes were fought at a high pitch, but no more goals were to be had. Thompson finished with 23 saves for Glenvar.

The loss dropped Glenvar to 4-4-1 on the season. Last week the Highlanders beat Carroll County, 3-2, as Drew, Jenna Hux and Kira Pierce scored goals.

The boys are 4-6, having also beaten Carroll last week. Glenvar won 7-3 as seven different players scored, including Jarid Scott, Cameron Shepherd, Matthew Smith, Leonel Montanez, Kaid Fuhrman, Brennen Michael and Gavin Curfiss.

The Highlanders will host Alleghany today with the boys at 5:30 pm and the girls to follow.
