The Glenvar and Salem cross country teams will run in the Alleghany Invitational at the Jackson River Complex course in Covington this Saturday. The Spartans were off in the past week but Glenvar ran in the “Clash with the Titans” meet at Hidden Valley last Saturday and the GHS boys won the team title.
The Highlanders put on a pack-running clinic at Hidden Valley, scoring 39 points to easily top the eight-team field while outpacing second-place William Byrd (75) and host Hidden Valley (76). Glenvar placed four runners inside the top 10 and all five scoring runners in the top 11, recording a tight top-five compression spread of just 33 seconds with an average team time of 18 minutes, 15 seconds.
Freshman Jaxson Kuzmich led the Highlanders, crossing the finish line in fourth place overall with a team-best 5,000-meter time of 17:56.92. Senior Asher Faught took seventh in 18:09.23 while senior Evan Harris (18:16.26) and sophomore Zachary Elijah Davis (18:22.82) finished back-to-back in eighth and ninth place. Junior Jackson Wimmer rounded out the scoring in 11th with a time of 18:30.74.
In the Junior Varsity Boys 5,000-meter event, Glenvar claimed second place in the team standings with 35 points, finishing three points behind Cave Spring (32). Freshman Matthew Gard led the JV squad with a runner-up finish in 19:50.92.
In the Varsity Girls race, Glenvar finished fifth overall in the team standings with 115 points. Junior Genna Shanks led the Lady Highlanders, finishing 13th overall in 26:31.76, followed by junior Naomi Kidd in 23rd (29:25.84). Radford won the girls’ varsity team championship.
The Andrew Lewis and Glenvar Middle School cross country teams also competed at Hidden Valley. The Wolverine girls were third out of 10 teams with Madalyn Eversole finishing second in the race and Allison Rude placing 11th overall. Other point scorers were Annika Thomas, Hannah Nunley and Ashanae Morris-Dwight.
The Lewis boys were fifth out of 15 teams, with Felix Ruck placing 11th overall. Other point scorers were Parker Garst, Jake Palleria, Owen Whitlow and Blake Smith.
