Does anyone remember “The Unknown Comic?” His real name was Murray Langston and he used to perform with a paper bag over his head and went by that moniker. It was an unusual act but he was funny. I’m sure Howie Mandel really liked him.
Well, we almost had “The Unknown Winner” this week for our football contest. As I was correcting the contest Monday night while watching the Rams beat the Giants, I had an entry with just three misses on a very tough week. As I kept correcting, this entry remained in the lead and it looked like it might win. Only thing is, there was no name on the entry blank.
Fortunately we had a real winner. Near the end of the stack I corrected Tyler Coe’s entry and he also missed three. Tyler then won on the tie-breaker because our unknown contestant also failed to put a tie-breaking high point total on his entry. Coe guessed 48, and that was pretty close to the actual high by Florida against Auburn so he probably would have won anyway.
So, Tyler gets the $50 gift certificate from Mac & Bob’s and he earned it. Tyler’s a freshman lineman on the Salem JV football team and he picked the Spartans to beat Dinwiddie last Friday.
Our Unknown Contestant also picked Salem to win but the closest to the actual score was Bill Thorne, who was six total points away. The actual score was 38-14 and Bill was off by three on each score, guessing 41-17. He beat out Don Fant for the round of golf at the Salem Municipal Course by one point, as Don guessed 42-17 for the final in favor of the Spartans.
For this week’s “19th Hole” question tell me how many yards Jordan McCadden will rush for against Blacksburg this week. In four games he’s rushed for 1,135 yards. If you’re closest to his total Friday night it’s good for a free day of golf at Academy Street.
