We have lots of stuff to give away this week since I didn’t have time to correct the contests prior to our “early deadlines” for Thanksgiving.
For the contest from two weeks ago, which ran in the November 17 issue, our winner is Pam “The Little General” Cassell. We had several folks who missed just two games that week but she was closest to the point total of 54 by Salem over Western Albemarle. And even that was close, as Warren Goin only missed two but had 51 for high points while the Little General guessed 56. So, Pam gets the $50 gift certificate from Mac & Bob’s and the Blizzard from Dairy Queen.
For our “19th Hole” that week I asked what you had to be thankful for, and I got a lot of answers with family themes and good health. That’s all great but it’s hard to pick one out of that crowd so I went with Darin Creger who said he’s thankful basketball season is here because the UVA and Tech football teams weren’t very good. He’ll get a free day of golf at the Academy Street course in Salem for that answer.
Last week’s contest was a tough one. Everyone got credit for the Tech-UVA game since it was cancelled after the paper was printed and I forgot the Dallas-Giants game was played on Thanksgiving, so if you played your cards right that was another one you should have gotten correct. However, the other 13 games were tough and our winner, Richard Miller, was the only person to miss as few as five.
The high school games were especially tough last week as Salem, Glenvar and Lord Botetourt all lost. If you pick those three every week you usually do pretty well, but all three lost regional finals and many contestants missed all three, or at least two, of those games. Miller missed the LB loss but was good enough on the others to claim the gift certificate from Mac & Bob’s and the Blizzard from Dairy Queen.
For our “19th Hole” last week I asked you to pick the score of the Salem game, and the final was 35-21 after Glass decided to punch one more in when all they needed to do was kneel down and run out the clock. Three folks tied for closest, all picking Glass and being seven total points off the actual score. Wayne Sowers had Glass winning 31-24, Gary Massengill had the Hilltoppers at 28-21 and our friend the Little General had it 35-28 Glass. So, we’ll give all three of them a free day of golf.
For this week’s “19th Hole” give me your prediction on the Class 3 state semifinal, as Christiansburg plays at Heritage Saturday. You have former Glenvar assistant Alex Wilkins coaching C’burg and former Salem High receiver Brad Bradley calling the shots at Heritage. It should be a good one, put your prediction in the space provided and the closest to the actual score gets a free round of golf at the Salem Municipal course. –Brian Hoffman
