Maroon softball team sweeps Bridgewater in doubleheader

The Roanoke College softball team will play a doubleheader at Lynchburg College this Saturday as they complete a string of six straight road games against Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponents.

The stretch opened last Wednesday when the Maroons swept two at Bridgewater, both by shutout scores. RC won the first game, 6-0, then flipped another shutout in the second game, 9-0, to improve to 18-12 on the season.

In the first game four Maroons tallied two hits each. Katie Smith, Anna Clowdis, Mattie Morris and Becca Wenger. Taylor Carter drove in two runs. as Roanoke shut out Bridgewater 6-0 in game one.

On the mound, Emily Salsberry allowed only five hits in the shutout while striking out five in the complete game performance.

In the second game Roanoke scored six runs in the top of the second inning, highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles from Kendall Penn and Wenger to make it 2-0. With two outs later in the inning, Carter hit an RBI double, followed by two straight RBI infield singles from Smith and Clowdis. Ruthie Williams closed out the scoring with an RBI single to take a 6-0 edge.

Teresa Wagner earned the win, allowing only three hits in the shutout performance while striking out six.

The sweep gave the Maroons a 5-3 conference record. They were scheduled to play two at Randolph College on Tuesday.
