Roanoke College will induct five new members into the school’s Hall of Fame this weekend as part of the school’s annual Alumni Weekend. The induction ceremony will take place at 7 pm on Friday night.
This year’s class includes Steve Mason’91, Robin McLaughlin Gallagher ’94, Melissa Slusher Rickmon ’04, Matt Madalon ’06 and Brandon Ketron ’12
Mason earned First Team All-ODAC and Third Team All-American honors in both 1990 and 1991. A four-year letterman and three-plus-year starter for the Maroons, he led Roanoke to ODAC Championships in 1988 and 1990. Mason’s play in goal was an important catalyst in the Maroons’ run to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Tournament.
At his time of induction, Mason ranks as follows in the record books: second in career goals against average, fourth in career saves, fifth in career saves/game, sixth in career wins, and ninth in career save percentage. For a single season, he ranks sixth in saves, fourth and seventh in saves per game avg. (two seasons), sixth in save percentage, and second, fourth, and fifth in goals against avg. (three seasons).
In 1990, Mason earned the Paul S. Griffin Award for dedication and leadership and in his senior year was selected as the Roanoke College Male Athlete of the year.
Following her graduation, McLaughlin was the women’s soccer team’s all-time leading scorer until the 2004 season. McLaughlin racked up 94 points on 41 goals and 12 assists in her time with the Maroons as a forward. She was a First-Team All-ODAC selection in 1992 and 1993 in addition to earning second-team honors in 1991.
McLaughlin helped power the Maroons to four straight ODAC Championship games including the 1990 ODAC Title. She was also a VaSID All-State and an NSCAA All-South Region selection as a senior.
Slusher’s standout performances garnered her three ODAC Player of the Week awards, First Team All-ODAC honors, and Second Team All-State accolades in addition to being a three-time Second Team All-ODAC selection. Her prowess on the court and in the classroom led her to being and Academic All-American nominee as well.
Slusher currently sits second in career attacking percentage (.346), career kills (1568), and single season kills (458 in 2002) as well as fifth in career digs (1073), and ninth in career aces (146) in the women’s volleyball record book.
Madalon led the Maroons to back-to-back ODAC Championships and NCAA Tournament Final Four appearances in his three seasons at Roanoke. The goalkeeper was a two-time Second Team USILA All-American, two-time VaSID All-State, and two-time First Team All-ODAC selection. Madalon’s work between the pipes earned him ODAC Player of the Year accolades and a selection to the USILA North/South All-Star game following his senior campaign.
At the time of his induction, Madalon ranks third in wins, third in saves per game, fourth in goals against average, and seventh in saves in the Roanoke career record book. He also holds third and 10th in saves and third in wins in the single season categories.
Ketron was a three-time First Team All-ODAC honoree and finished top five as an individual in three of his four years at the ODAC Golf Championships. His career was highlighted by winning the 2012 ODAC Tournament as an individual and earning the 2012 ODAC Ted Keller Sportsmanship Award in his senior season. Ketron’s contributions to the golf team led them to a second-place finish at the 2012 ODAC Championships, Roanoke’s best conference finish since their ODAC titles in 1980 and 1981.
