Margaret Hodges McGuire, 76, of Salem, joined her family in heaven on Thursday, February 26, 2026. A lifelong Salem resident, Margie, as she was known to her family (Maggie to friends and co-workers) was preceded in death by her husband, Michael McGuire; her parents, Harry and Willia Hodges; her sisters, Betty Hall, Joan Thomas, Ruby Whitlock, and Linda Shepherd; and by her beloved little dog, Bailey. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a special friend, Clementh Hannah.
After graduating from Andrew Lewis High School, Margie worked in a number of positions primarily in the accounting field, including at H&C Coffee, Holiday Inn Tanglewood, and the Virginia Dept. of Transportation, from which she retired. Margie enjoyed working, and she loved all her jobs, but she especially liked the opportunities the latter two positions gave her to meet celebrities and to travel.
A long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church in Salem, Margie loved the Lord Jesus. She loved worshiping with her church family, participating in church activities, and especially working with children. Margie also attended Beacon Baptist Church in Salem for a few years and talked often about how much she enjoyed her Sunday School teacher there. Margie never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. She had great compassion for others and would often offer to pray for someone she had just met who was going through a sad or difficult experience. At the same time, she liked to joke and have fun, and she especially enjoyed teasing and carrying on with her two oldest nephews.
Except for Jesus, Margie loved her family above all. She spent many years caring for her mother after her father passed away and later taking care of her husband before his death. She missed her family terribly, especially her sister Linda (Sissy) who was just a little over a year younger than Margie. Although those of us who knew and loved Margie will miss her here on this earth, we’re also rejoicing for her knowing she’s now at home with Jesus and reunited with her precious loved ones.
The family would especially like to thank the staff and residents of the Joseph C. Thomas Center at Richfield Assisted Living in Salem who welcomed Margie and made her feel so at home and happy during the time she lived there.
Per Margie’s wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church Salem, Beacon Baptist Church Salem, or the Angels of Assisi Community Pet Clinic and Adoption Center in Roanoke.
