Roanoke College senior Maggie McCray set the new program single-season strikeout record Monday afternoon as the Roanoke College softball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader at 12th ranked Randolph-Macon College. The Yellowjackets won the first game, 12-3, but McCray pitched the Maroons to a win in the nightcap, 6-1.
McCray, who already broke the single-game strikeout record twice this season, fanned seven in game two for 142 strikeouts on the year to surpass Kelly Higbie’s former top mark of 141 in 2012.
Maggie got all the offense she needed on a Madison Courts three-run home run in the fourth inning. Adrianna Rivera slapped RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings and Kassidy Lancos brought in another run in the seventh on a groundout.
McCray got out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth with a strikeout and forced three foul outs in the sixth. RMC loaded the bases again in the seventh but McCray closed out the game, allowing just one run.
With the split Roanoke returned to Salem with an even 15-15 record on the season. Roanoke dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Virginia Wesleyan at Virginia Beach Sunday, 9-2 and 4-1.
The Maroons were scheduled to host Lynchburg in a doubleheader at the Moyer Complex Wednesday. Today they’ll go to Danville for two against Averett University.
