Region 4D tennis opens Monday

Zoe Prosser hits a return for Salem in last week’s win over Lord Botetourt.

The Salem boys and girls will open Region 4D tennis team competition next Monday, May 23. Team tournaments are scheduled for May 23, 24 and 26 with individual singles and doubles on May 31 and June 1.
Both teams were scheduled to wrap up the regular season on Wednesday, with the girls going to Pulaski and the girls playing the Cougars are home.
Both teams played Lord Botetourt with mixed results last Wednesday, with the boys playing at the high school and the girls at the Salem Civic Center. The girls took a 9-0 win over the Cavaliers with singles wins from Lauren Baba, Claire Rawlins, Caroline Loveday, Morgan Tobey, Zoe Prosser and Emma Johnson. Salem swept the doubles with the same six.
The boys lost to Lord Botetourt, 8-1. Sophomore Joren Poush played his best match of the year to pick up Salem’s only point. Cooper Davis played a close match at number six and Cole Maggi and Logan Butcher lost in a tie-breaker at second doubles.
On Monday the girls won a close one at Cave Spring, 5-4. Rawlins, Loveday and Tobey won at singles as the two split. In doubles Baba and Rawlins won at one and Loveday and Tobey won at two as Salem pulled out the win.
The girls lost to a strong Blacksburg team on Tuesday, 9-0.
