The Roanoke College women prevailed in a shootout for a 3-2 field hockey win over Batten University in Virginia Beach last Saturday. Batten is the former Virginia Wesleyan University.
After a shotless first half, Landry Meyer scored for Batten, but Roanoke’s Corinne Orlando answered six minutes later. Meyer would go on to score her second goal in the 48th minute, but Orlando answered again for the Maroons two minutes later and a shootout was needed to declare a winner.
Gisele Harris and Sophie Baker scored for Roanoke in the penalty shootout while RC goalie Willemijn Van Putten stopped four Marlins players from scoring to secure the win.
With the win, the Maroons improved to 4-5 on the season. They were scheduled to host Washington & Lee in Salem on Wednesday.
