Senior Madison Cooke had six hits as the Roanoke College softball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference double-header Saturday against visiting Shenandoah University. The Maroons dropped the first game, 1-0, but bounced back to win game two, 5-1, at the Moyer Complex in Salem.
Shenandoah scored the game’s only run in the first inning, taking advantage of a Maroon error. The Maroons loaded the bases in the third but had a runner thrown out at home on a potential sacrifice fly. Roanoke loaded the bases in the fifth and seventh but couldn’t push a run across the plate. Maggie McCray struck out 11, giving up just one unearned run.
In the nightcap Roanoke scored single runs in the first and sec-ond innings. Starting pitcher Baylee Compton helped her own cause with an RBI single in the first, and the Maroons scored a run on an error in the second. RC scored another unearned run in the fourth and plated two insurance runs in the sixth.
Compton got the win in the circle, working three innings. Lindsay Gedro threw four score-less innings of relief to earn the save.
The split left the Maroons at 10-8 over-all and 2-2 in the ODAC. They had a non-conference double-header in Raleigh, NC against William Peace on Wednesday and this Saturday they travel to Sweet Briar for two. This Sunday Roanoke will host Randolph College at the Moyer complex for a double-header beginning at 1 pm.
