Novonesis, a Salem-based biotechnology company, was named Large Leading Tech Company of the Year at the Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council’s 25th annual TechNite celebration, held May 29 at Virginia Tech’s Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility.
Nearly 500 innovators, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders from across Virginia gathered for the milestone event, which celebrates the growth and success of the region’s technology and life sciences community. Presented by Woods Rogers, TechNite 2025 highlighted standout achievements and recognized leadership shaping the region’s innovation economy.
Novonesis shared the Large Leading Tech Company of the Year award with Munters Corporation. The award honors companies in the Roanoke or New River Valley that demonstrate excellence in people, programs and projects while advancing the region’s tech sector.
A global leader in biotechnology, Novonesis focuses on research, development and production of industrial enzymes, microorganisms and biopharmaceuticals. Its biosolutions help reduce reliance on fossil fuels, chemicals, and water, offering more sustainable ways to feed and fuel the world. In April, the company announced a $5 million expansion to its existing Salem facilities, which is expected to create new jobs.
“This region has transformed into a destination for tech and biotech,” said Taylor Spellman, director of the Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council. “That growth isn’t accidental. It’s the result of collaboration, resilience, and a shared vision of what’s possible when we stay committed to driving innovation.”
The evening also included the induction of Carilion Clinic President and CEO Nancy Agee into the RBTC Hall of Fame, the presentation of the Ruby Award to Marc Nelson, and the Hart of the Entrepreneur Impact Award to Qentoros. A tribute to past TechNite honorees was also held in recognition of the event’s 25-year legacy.
TechNite 2025 was sponsored by Woods Rogers, the City of Roanoke, Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation, Ridge View Bank, Roanoke County Economic Development, TechLab, Member One, Montgomery County Economic Development, Arctic Wolf, Barrows, Avantor, Botetourt County, Glo Fiber and P1 Technologies.
