A predawn fire displaced two adults and several pets from a home on Wildwood Road on Nov. 29, according to Roanoke County Fire and Rescue.
Crews were dispatched at 3:46 a.m. to the 2600 block of Wildwood Road in Salem for reports of a residential structure fire. Firefighters from Station 9 in Fort Lewis arrived to find flames coming from the basement and marked it a working fire at 3:54 a.m.
The blaze was brought under control in about five minutes.
Two adults, along with two dogs and a cat, were able to escape unharmed, officials said. The American Red Cross was assisting the residents, who were displaced by the fire.
The Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office said the fire was accidental and caused by a space heater.
“The 2 occupants were alerted to the fire due to working smoke alarms in the residence. No injuries or fatalities. Damage estimates are $50,000,” the office said in a statement.
The fire marshal continues to investigate.
