We have exciting news this week as we have two winners to announce due to early Thanksgiving Day deadlines when I didn’t have time to correct the con-tests from the November 20 edition. So, this week we’re announcing winners from that week and last week, November 27.
We’ll do this in FIFO fashion, which is something I learned in Economics class a long time ago at Roanoke College. That means, “First In, First Out,” as opposed to LIFO, which is “Last In, First Out.” I can’t remember much more from that class but I turned to sports journalism after school and it really wasn’t necessary.
The “First In” winner is Joe Rowe who missed just three games the weekend before Thanksgiving. It came down to the tie-breaker and he was just one off the high of 42 scored by both Oregon and Pitt, so Joe gets the $50 gift certificate from Mac & Bob’s.
Our 19th hole winner, good for a day of golf at the Salem Municipal Course, was Joe Whelby of Salem. He was closest to the Lord Botetourt-William Byrd score of 35-21 in favor of the Cavaliers.
This wee was an even better week for Whelby, as he won the “Last Out” contest in the November 27 issue. Joe missed just two games, NC State over Carolina and the Texans over the Colts, and picked 70 as his high point total. That proved to be a good choice when Magna Vista hung 65 on Lord Botetourt, so Joe gets the $50 gift certificate from Mac & Bob’s. If Joe is reading this please come by the office to pick up your prizes.
sually I mail them but Joe didn’t put his address on the entry blank.
For last week’s 19th Hole I asked you to pick the winner of the Tech-UVA game. We must have some loyal Tech fans around here as the Hokies got a lot more support than I expected, but that didn’t help them as the Wahoos took a 27-7 win. Hank Ebert and T.J. Beason Myers tied for closest to that score so we’ll give them both a free day of golf.
For this week’s 19th hole give me your prediction on the Glenvar-Union Class 2 state semifinal game Saturday afternoon in Big Stone Gap. The closest to the actual score will soon be playing golf on Academy Street.
