The Salem High girls’ lacrosse season ended with an overtime lose in the state quarterfinal round last Friday. The Spartans fell to Dominion High in Sterling, VA, 8-7.
Salem led for most of the game. The Spartans jumped on top 4-0 in the first half and still had a two goal lead at 7-5 with three minutes remaining in regulation. However, the Titans were able to tie the score, then won it in overtime.
“Our defense played amazing during this game,” said Salem coach Mary Schwarz, who was missing five girls who had left for vacation. Goalie Bailey Redford picked up the team with 19 saves along with four caused turnovers and seven ground balls.
“Bailey had an amazing game,” said Schwartz. “The team fought hard and with limited subs fatigue definitely set in.”
Rylee McNeill had two goals for Salem and scoring one each were Vivienne Eaton, London Fralin, Ashley Davis, Anne Thomas and Maidson Southern. Eliza Blair had five caused turnovers and two ground balls.
With the loss Salem finished the season at 12-5.
“We were very young,” said Schwartz. “At the beginning of the season some of the girls were just learning how to catch the ball, and no one thought we could go this far.”
The All-Region 4D team has been announced and Redford, a senior, is first team at goal and co-Player of the Year. Also on the first team are Thomas and Southern on attack and McNeill at midfield. Second teamers are Davis at midfield and Blair and Gabby Crawley on defense.
“I’m very proud of this group,” said Schwartz. “They accomplished so many things this year and fought till the end.”
