One iconic part of the Revolutionary War that most people recognize is the British soldiers’ red coats.
Did you know that you could learn about a British soldier just from his uniform?
For example, this coat is from the Brigade of Guards, specifically the Regiment of Foot Guards. A viewer can tell this from the blue “facings” and ribbon pattern on the cuffs of the sleeves and along the buttons.
To learn more about the life of a British Soldier, visit the Salem Museum this weekend for Lord Dunmore Day, Saturday September 13 from 10am-3pm.
It will also be the final day to view “Salem’s Hidden Hero: Andrew Lewis and the Revolutionary War.”
Join the Salem Museum for a day of living history and learning about the British side of the American Revolution. Visitors will meet Virginia’s last Royal Governor, engage with British soldiers, and hear lectures about the War of Independence. At 11am, Michael Henningsen, dressed as Lord Dunmore, will give his talk “Governor Dunmore’s War – A Prelude to Self-Governance.” At 1pm, Jeff Briggs of the Fincastle Company will describe “The Life of a British Soldier.” All of the day’s activities are free and open to the public.
