Salem Spartans run in “Polar Bear” track meet

The Salem High indoor track team was outdoors last week. The Spartans participated in a “Polar Bear” meet on Saturday at Blacksburg High School.

“In addition to  being able to race and compete, we also had quite a few seasonal best performances,” said Salem High girls’ coach Tom Roth.

In the 300 Janae Blakeney, ShaCoya Price, China Huffman and Raniyah Majied all had seasonal bests. In the 500 Raniyah, China, Ellie Look and Caroline Seto all ran their best this season and n the 1000- Hannah Moran and Seto both had season bests. In the 3200 Madison Baxley ran a conference qualifying time.

The 4×400 relay team of Janae, Shacoya, China and Ellie ran the fastest time this season while the

4×800 relay of Moran, Hannah Sowers, Alexis Stover and Allie Roland ran the fastest relay time thus far.

For the boys, placing and scoring were Maxwell Plummer, 1st in the shot put and improved by over 2 feet, and Sean Tyree, 3rd in the 300m run. The 4×400 Relay placed third with Logan Wagher, Tyree, Hunter Tensen and Aiden Sable, dropping 27 seconds as a team.

Tyree also ran in the 500 and just missed placing. Tensen and Tyler Williams competed in the 500 and both ran their personal bests. Elijah Hairston ran in the 1000 with a new PR and Williams had a new PR in the 300.

Salem will have three girls competing this weekend at Virginia Tech’s high school invite: Moran in the 1600 and 3200, Majied in the 500 and 1000 and Mia Cromer in the high Jump.
