The Salem High boys’ soccer team is looking for a better result Friday when the Spartans host Blacksburg at 7 pm at Spartan Field. It couldn’t be much worse than the first time around, when the Spartans lost to the Bruins 7-0 in Blacksburg.
The Salemites, who were 8-2 after winning at Cave Spring Tuesday night, are having an excellent season with the exception that one game. They have four shutout wins and their only other loss was to Class 5 Patrick Henry, who has a strong team. The Spartans are hoping to go far in the post-season, but as usual Blacksburg is a big hurdle to get over.
“We get them at home this time,” said Salem coach David Atkins. “We’ll do our best to play harder and much better.”
Salem had a thriller Tuesday at Cave Spring Tuesday. They were down 1-0 with five minutes to go when the Spartans were awarded a penalty kick. Anthony Rugama took the kick and it was blocked, but he scored on the rebound. Then, with about 20 seconds to go, Rugama assisted Elijah Clark for the game winner.
The Spartans were scheduled to host Lord Boteourt Wednesday but results were too late for publication.
