Dev Patel serves one up for the Salem boys.

The Salem High tennis teams will take on Liberty Christian Academy Friday in non-district matches. The girls will host the Bulldogs while the boys will play at Lynchburg.

Salem teams played Pulaski on Tuesday but results were too late for publication. Last Thursday both teams played Patrick Henry and the Patriots came out on top in both matches.

The boys lost 8-1, with Thomas Powell scoring Salem’s point. Evan Graybill lost at number one but played well.

“Evan is competitive in the number one position, demonstrating aggressive groundstrokes and volleys,” said Salem coach Steve Lily. “A senior who was an important doubles player last year has dramatically improved from the seventh singles spot in ’25. As in every previous year, the Spartans’ objective is to improve at least one level throughout the season.”

The girls’ lost to PH at River’s Edge, 7-2. Kiele Dudley and Gracie Michael had singles wins for Salem at numbers five and six.

“It was a tough day as the Rincon sisters were playing, who dominate junior tennis in the area,” said Salem High girls’ tennis coach Jill Perez. “We knew that numbers one through three on the PH side would be hard to beat, but we were hopeful we might have some success at the lower courts and the SHS girls didn’t disappoint.”
